Fundraising & Service Events
Fundraising
Our two main fundraising events support the troop throughout the year and give Scouts opportunities to build confidence, teamwork, and hands-on skills:
Christmas Tree Sales - Held on weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas, this event is a long-standing tradition for Troop 1083. Scouts learn practical skills like sawing tree bases to help them absorb water, safely tying trees to vehicles, salesmanship, and customer service. It’s a fun, team-oriented way to support the troop while building useful life skills.
Mulch Sales - Scouts help prepare, organize, and load mulch into vehicles in mid-March. This is a major fundraiser and team effort that builds coordination, responsibility, and communication skills.
Service Projects
Community service is an essential part of Scouting. In addition to Scout-led service projects throughout the year (including Eagle Scout projects), our troop regularly participates in:
Scouting for Food (November): A national service initiative where Scouts collect non-perishable food for local food banks.
Stream Clean-Up (April): Scouts help maintain the health of local waterways and ecosystems.
Support for Our Charter Organization, Randolph Civic Foundation: In the past, we have assisted with community events and helped distribute the Echo newsletter.
Through both fundraising and service projects, Scouts give back to the community while also fulfilling advancement requirements. MCPS students earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours, and all participants gain hands-on experience in leadership, environmental stewardship, and civic engagement.
